Sunfield Home Outing May 2010
Members of the Gillitts Lions Club recently took a group from Sunfield Home in Howick away for a weekend on a Game Farm in the Colenso area of Kwa Zulu Natal. Sunfield Home house mentally challenged persons from all walks of life, and this group consisted of 13 young adults. The trip began on Friday afternoon when the team of Lions set up camp and prepared for the arrival of the guests. Needless to say, it was of course necessary to sample the refreshments and this was done with great energy. On Saturday morning the group arrived at the camp and the fun began. They were entertained by Charles as the Head Ranger of the trip and set off on a walk identifying different animals and bird life in the area. We are not sure who was saying what, but there appeared to be much laughter in the group. As the afternoon closed on us we set about collecting firewood for the cold evening fast approaching. It was a wonderful opportunity to observe the sunset and just listen to nature.
A lovely log fire and a slap up meal was served and then the entertainment began. The lions members were a treat to see and this was followed by the “Sunfield Hoods” version of our newly acclaimed national dance the Diski followed by the traditional gum boot dance. After a good nights sleep in the camp and a hearty breakfast they set off on another game walk and on their return were treated to the Gillitts Lions traditional marshmallow tree. After lunch our weary guests departed and the Lions broke camp. Every member was touched by the warmth and new friendships that had been forged whilst doing what we believe “WE SERVE”
